Re: Ready for Winter

Hello Diana and all,

Labor Day here was wonderrful. For once, it wasn't too hot or humid; just
perfect. I spent 9 hours of the holiday working in the perennial borders.
Houseplants due to come in can spend another week or two outdoors before the
cold snap comes to my area (east central Iowa). My brand new three-shelf
light stand is ready for them, though I know it won't hold them all.

I intend to start repotting and cleaning all of the houseplants that are
outdoors this weekend, and should be finished in a week. Also on the
schedule are potting up many semp begonias and double-flowered and
variegated impatiens to hold over for next spring. All will be cut back
after potting; I'll have plenty of cuttings to root.

I leave Christmas cactus outdoors in a protected area until the low dips
down to the mid and upper 30s. Then in they go to a dark area to set buds.
Blooms pop between Thanksgiving and New Year's Day.

My other cacti also get the cool treatment, but the extent of the chill
night air depends on the variety. They all seem to approve.

This list will probably become much more active soon. I've missed the
discussions and I look forward to the joys of gardening indoors.
