Re: Ready for Winter

I'm a newbie but am glad to join the group.

Hi

Our Labor day weather was wonderful (especially today). Here in Black
Forest, Colorado (about 10 miles north of Colorado Springs) the temp.
hit the low 80's. It won't be long, so we are enjoying the last of the
warm weather. Spent the weekend working on yard and in the greenhouse.
We have about 20 tomato plants that began to ripen about a week ago. We
are now picking 5-10 tomatoes each day. We are very popular with our
co-workers.

This was the first year that we worked the greenhouse and learned a lot
from the experience. I can't wait until next year! I want to do so much
more including maybe some orchids and other flowering house plants as
well as herbs. We're also going to attempt a garden, which at 7500 feet
and on soil that is trying to turn back into granite mountain, may be
difficult but I really have the urge. I have collected many of the
beautiful wildflower seeds from around here and plan to start some of
them indoors this winter.

I have many houseplants outside including several begonias (a Rieger
which is my favorite) as well as about 8 different christmas cacti. (I
seem to be partial to flowering houseplants). Speaking of Rieger
begonias, does anyone know a source of some of the other colors? I have
a pink and would love a salmon and yellow.

I was noticing the lack of birds this weekend. The robins are gone as
well as the mountain bluebirds. The humming bird population has
decreased. That certainly is a sign of fall being just around the
corner.
