New to the list

Hi,

I am new to the list and the instructions advised giving some background
info, so here it is.

I am addicted to gardening. About 10 years ago, I was really involved in it.
I had several houseplants and started all my outdoor annuals from seed
planted inside in late winter. I was immersed, but it was a rental home and
my kids became involved in sports 5 days a week, so I stopped. I kept up
with my house plants and had a honeysuckle outdoors.

Now the kids are out on their own and we have moved to 2 acres in the
foothills of Mt. Hood. The lower acre is landscaped by nature in "Rain
Forest" style. I have plans for the upper acre and a bit in the lower acre.

My houseplant collection just grew. My mother-in-law's Christmas cactus that
was her mother's, is now in our "plant room/library". It is 4 feet in
diameter. One of my friend's mom died and she gave me her plants. I now
have a "Crown of Thorns", a Rabbit or Hare's foot fern, a different kind of
Easter or Christmas cactus and some plants I haven't yet identified. I
repotted the new ones yesterday. Home Depot has great inexpensive ceramic
pots. I counted all my indoor plants last night and they number 32. Geez.

Our new home has white walls and windows everywhere. Two of the living room
windows are north facing, but directly opposite is the plant room with a
large south facing window. The kitchen and nook area has 2 south facing
windows and an east window. My plants are in heaven and they are growing
like crazy. The kitchen cabinets stop before the ceiling, so I can hang
plants from the cabinets. It's so beautiful.

The thing is, i have a plant stand that has 3 empty spots and I don't know
where to get unique houseplants that actually live. Most of my plants have
come from cuttings rather than a store. The store ones seem to die quickly.
I have combined all kinds of plants. I have a palm-like plant that has
spider plant around it's base. I planted pothos, spider plant and
nephythytis around the base of my dieffenbachia. But, I'm running out of
ideas. I need variety.. Where would I go to find unusual houseplants? We
live about 40 miles from Portland.

I just bought some paperwhites for forcing and can't wait to cool them and
have some flowers and fragrance in winter. I wish I had a greenhouse. I am
looking forward to being in this group. I can't get enough of this stuff.

Thanks,
Nancy
