[miniaturerockgardens] Plastic troughs?

From: Diana Pederson <plant@toast.net>

Hi:

Right now I am feeling very discouraged. I love my
trough gardens but can no longer lift them to move them
around. Need to replace them with something lighter.

I am thinking of using those ugly gray "busboy" plastic
trays that dirty silverware, dishes, etc. are collected
in at restaurants.

Suggestions on using these would be appreciated. I am
wondering just how many drainage holes I would have to
make (with a hot nail?)? Also, would there be a way to
"pretty up" the outside without adding a lot of
weight? Help is needed with this. Might there be some
kind of paint that would stick to plastic?

Less than 2 weeks ago I found out I have developed some
kind of arthritis in my hands and can no longer even
bend the left two fingers on my right hand. The joints
are starting to show degeneration. Am waiting to find
out if it is osteo or rheumatoid arthritis. My
vocational rehab counselor says rheumatoid would be
best because of new treatments available. With my luck
I'll be allergic to the new medicine or have
osteoarthritis instead.

I know others on this list are disabled too. Does
anyone have this problem in their hands. If so, how
are you managing "heavy work" in your gardens? Saying
I am discouraged right now is an understatement.

Look for an article in Business Week magazine on
netzero internet service provider. I was interviewed
last week by a reporter and he sent a photographer to
my house this past Sunday. Hopefully the picture
selected shows me sitting at the edge of a raised bed
garden surrounded by pots of hyacinths and tulips. In
some of the pictures I was holding up a clay pot of
sempervivums. The photographer said the article should
be in one of the next couple of weeks issues! Please
take a look. I got picked because I use netzero AND
because the reporter had checked out my "The Enabling
Garden" column at suite101.com. He said the column
would be specifically mentioned since it deals with
gardening for the disabled and elderly! I couldn't
have paid for this publicity if I had wanted too!
