Hi chaps,
What about some lateral thinking from an engineer:
How about putting the heavy troughs on wheels (OK if your garden is on
a slope or terraced this is not such a good idea). In the UK its
possible to buy circular pot bases with three wheels on specifically
designed for moving tender fruit trees around to survive our
tempramental weather. A cheaper alternative would be to rig up a base
with heavy duty castors (sorry Dunno if that translates across the
Atlantic), at least one a locking one, and with the addition of holes
for drainage, the troughs can be left on these permenantly. It also
has the advantage of raising the trough by the height of the wheels
and base.
Diana, I travelled to Michigan a few times when I worked for Ford &
the winters you have there are awesome. The first time I came out to
find my car wheels with flat bottoms and the car covered in a clear
sheet of ice has stuck in my memory, that and the racoons throwing my
trash back out of the dumpster immediately after I'd put it in.
Keep smiling
