plant survival in winter

From: schwakbok@msn.com

I am a novice trough gardener here in zone 4 Wisconsin. I have over-wintered troughs of sempervivum here with no problem, but would like suggestions for other plants. Would Hosta's survive, as was mentioned, and if so, how deep would the trough need to be? Any other plants? As I said, I am a novice but am busy making troughs in our unusually mild (so far)winter.
