Well believe it or not the word comes from livestock watering containers
which were found and coveted for growing alpines, hence the name linked with
alpine gardening. There is a site, maybe someone can post the address as I
do not know it at this moment, that explains trough culture very well
indeed.
My explanation: it is a homemade container made of cement/peat/sand, or
vermiculite and molded into a container suitable for growing alpines which
is most attractive for displaying same. Very good for those small subjects
and composing mini landscapes.
I have been doing this for a number of years and find it very rewarding.
