I have grown mini hostas in a trough for at least 4 years.  Yes they will
survive, they are very tough.  More so than most alpines.  I feel any trough
should have a depth of at least 4-6".  6" is better as far as I am concerned
but anything is debatable.  I suppose it depends on the plants, placement
(sun/shade), ability to keep it watered, soil composition, etc.    Dish
gardens could be used interchangeably with troughs.  Similar idea and
conditions but I think of trough gardens as an outdoor project so I can grow
those beautiful little alpines that would otherwise have a hard time
surviving in our climate and soil.

I will try to get a list of plants that I grow in my troughs and post it
soon.
