Michelle-
I garden in Zone 4 also; NE Nebraska. I have an old rambler that I got from
cousins on an old family farm. I puzzled over what it was for years and
finally have decided it is probably 'Dorthy Perkins'. It IS tough. Survives
our winters no matter how harsh without ever being protected in any way. The
growth on it in one season is phenomenol! It blooms only once and is covered
with small (1") palest pink double roses in clusters. No scent. It blooms for
maybe 4 or 5 weeks. Then it drops all it's flowers so no hips. It generally
ends up with some powdery mildew which never seems to affect the health of the
plant. (Our area is very humid.) I'm seeing 'Dorthy Perkins' in catalogs this
year where I hadn't before. So if you are looking for a tough rambler... I
think there is a red version, too, which I can't think of the name of right
now. So many choices.
