I simply pile mulch over them. Deeply. Then cut them back in late
November (when they're totally dormnant) to prevent wind rock. In early
Spring, pull the mulch away. That's it. If one of them doesn't make it, it
gets replaced with something that's hopefully hardier.
Those cones are awful. A friend of mine used them and the fungus and mildew
were grusome.
