Hi Lori,
The best advice I can give you, after putting in 4 relatively mediocre
gardens in my adulthood,<g>
is to NOT line your yard with trees. I have finally moved beyond that. Look
at the spaces that need shade
or concealment, and place your trees and shrubs accordingly.
The flower beds will follow. Of course you will have to take into
consideration the exposure and the micro climate conditions.
Think about creating spaces or rooms in your garden rather than a huge
space. Block out the unsightly views with trees, and use low
growing plants where you would like a view. If you are planning to design
your garden yourself, take your time, study garden books
and do not plant your bedding plants until you decide where the main trees
and shrubs belong. Reputable nurseries are delighted to
assist you with this, just be fair and compensate them for their time and
efforts. You will be greatly rewarded in the long run.
If you consider your area with the whole environment, instead of a square
lot, one can invision a much better space, as in, look
the long view, what do you really wnat to see? What do you want to block
out? My suggestion would be, is start with that,
& then begin to fine tune it.
Good luck with your efforts, and have fun doing so, I love it!
