don't know anything about roses

Hi everyone, I'm so glad that there is life on this list...I don't have
a clue about roses and I moved a couple last year that I need help with.

We lived in a house that was 100 years old and it had some roses growing
outside the window, they only bloomed once a year and I just had to open
the window to enjoy their fragrence...that is all I know about them. Oh,
and they had pink flowers.

Not knowing anything about roses, I wanted to bring them with me when we
moved and I didn't know how long it would be until I could plant them in
the ground. I had enough sense to go to a nursery that speciallized in
roses and he sold me a ton of stuff to keep them alive in pots until I
could plant them. They actually bloomed in the pots this summer...I
must have done something right!

Before we moved I did nothing with these roses, I didn't prune, I didn't
mulch, fertilize or anything else that you are supposed to do. I was
assuming that they are an old rose until the guy at the nursery told me
that they could have bloomed once because they weren't taken care of
properly.

In August we bought a new house and I planted my roses on the east side
of the house, but still gets some early afternoon sun. I think I made a
mistake, by the time fall came, my roses were moldy and full of black
spots. Help! What did I do wrong? I know that they didn't have this
problem before we moved. They only had partial sun before.

Also, we have an ugly metal shed in the back yard that isn't tall enough
to stand up in. I would like to plant some kind of roses that would
cover it. Any clues?
