Own root roses are just what the name says. They grow on their own roots.
Grafted roses are one kind of rose grafted onto the roots of another. I'm
not entirely clear *why* some roses are grafted onto the roots of another
but the fact that HT's are generally grafted makes me think that they have
been bred so much that their own roots don't do very well and they need
sturdier stock to grow them on.
