Re: ignorance

Michelle,
Own root stock means the rose grows on it's own roots, hybrids are
generally grafted roses, which means that a slip from say a beautiful
flowerer is attached to a root stock of an old hardy rose because the roots
survive much better than it's own would. Old garden roses are usually on
their own roots and have been around sometimes for a few hundred years,
they may not bloom as repeatedly as the new hybrid roses but in my opinion
are more fragrant and easier to grow requiring alot less care than the new
cultivars. Get a good rose book such as Peter Beales Roses, or Graham
Thomas, I'm sure there are many at the library to choose from. As to what
is best it depends on what your looking for. Old roses are generally
hardier, although in my area the old bourbon roses are very prone to black
spot. I suggest checking out a bunch of books at the library. I'm sure
you'll find the world of roses fascinating.
Forgot to mention Austin Roses, alot of times the answer to the best of
both worlds. Check them out.
Hope I've helped at least a little.
