They can get quite big in zone 8. I had them in New Orleans and I'd have
to cut them back frequently. They're quite forgiving about it though. In
the Spring you cut them down to about a foot, but they grow so fast that in
no time they're 8 feet tall again.

I do mine in the Spring. Here, in Western New York they get about 4 feet
tall, bloom a little, and then the frost gets them. Almost not worth the
effort. But in your zone, they really take off.
I really love the plant. They smell like honey. Really! And the name
'Butterfly Bush' is quite fitting. Hummingbirds also like them.
Now that we're totally off topic, I better say something 'rosey'.
I can also recommend Heirloom Old Garden Roses for own root roses. This is
another company that's suffered through all sorts of bizarre rumors, but
I've liked everything I've gotten from them.
