Hello Randy,

Your e-mail came through fine. Nice to see someone from WA state on the
list, Kinda feels like we are neighbors! Our climate and soils are
WAAAAAAAAY different here than in your area. I had a huge bed of roses
when I lived on the coast and a bit of blackspot or mildew hit once in a
while but everything lived over winter with a reasonable mulch etc.
Here I had bugs instead of disease and winter killed them every time, no
matter how careful I was. The seasons moderated enough here that I have
just started trying to grow a few roses again. I will not try to do any
hybridizing until I see which ones make it through the winter.

Grafting of small branched bushes does not succeed too well here. I
think it may be the hot winds and sun that are the culprits. I just
enjoy what will grow and do not try to battle the elements much now.

Keep us posted on what you are doing. There has not been much activity
on the rose list since I joined a couple weeks ago.

Happy New Year.

Patti Wenham
