Hello,
Omak/Okanogan area of Washington State had it's annual gaarden tour
Saturday. One of the questions most frequently asked of the Master
Gardeners was "Why are my rose leaves turning light yellow with green
veins?" Soil in this area is sandy and some is rocky as well. Everyone
who gardens and all who asked about their roses composts and gives a
generous helping to their beds every year. They also fertilize because
the nutrients leach out when they are watered or when it rains. This
year we had a much larger amount of rain than other years. The soil in
this region is alkaline and compost and sulphur do not seem to change
that no matter how much is applied throughout the year. Some of the
growers had applied sulphur and some had not. There were no aphids or
other bugs found on the plants in the daytime or at night. Tapping the
leaves over a sheet of white paper produced no indication of spider
mites and there were no webs. Inspection with a jewler's magnifying
glass revealed no signs of insects and no tiny holes which might be made
by them.
Does anyone else have this problem and if so how did you treat it? I
have noticed that two of my miniature roses seem to have this problem
but the others in the same bed do not.
I do not have many blooms on any of my roses this year. I have been
very careful to deadhead them as the blooms fade but that has not
helped. My older miniature roses which, in years past, have been a riot
of color all summer long have only 1 to 5 blooms at a time on them this
year. I do not have much of a problem with blackspot but I attribute
this to the fact we get a great deal of wind which dries the leaves very
soon after the rain stops.
