R. Canina germination was the subject of a research paper.
In the 1956 American Rose Annual G.D.Rowley from the John Innes
Horticultural Institution, England wrote: "However, one factor was found to
exert a great influence on both total viability and speed of germination.
That is the time at which the hips are harvested. Preliminary tests showed
that prematurely harvested seeds (that is, those collected at any time
between petal fall and while the hips are still green and the sepals fresh)
gave negligible germination over four years (only one in 300)." This is
followed by a table which is summarized here: Date of hip collection - Sept
8, Sept 22, Oct 6, Oct 20, and Dec 1. This is a three month range for when
they were able to pick good hips. The corresponding percent germinations
are: 17%, 53% 60%, 15%, and 13%. The corresponding color of the hips was:
Flushed orange, firm; Red, Firm; Red, Firm; Red, Firm; and Red, soft, and
jammy.
Another table presents the following information.
The first year after sowing only 0.7% of the seeds germinated, the second
year 30.7% germinated, the third year 1.2% germinated, the fourth year 0.7%,
and the fifth year 0.3% germinated.
