Thus far the rose you sent me, Michelle, is still small (1 1/2 x 1 1/2 feet
tall/wide) and looking wonderful and healthy even in some partial shade at
times. It's just about to open her first blooms here, perhaps this
afternoon. Thus far she only has about 2-3 buds per stem and I have no buds
dieing on me.
I do have two other roses in my garden 'Autumn Damask bifera' and a found
rose that I "beleive" to be 'Charles Lawson', that have tons of buds and
some of them also turn brown and fall off... I suspect that some roses have
SOOO many buds the shrub can't support them all to maturity.
My first thought was that it might be a lack of water, but we have VERY wet
Springs, and these last few years have been colder Springs too... so I
suspect that too much rain fail may actually add to the problem, along with
some balling of buds and blooms. Since they both put out SOOO many buds I
don't mine loosing some. The "found" rose puts out 10-13 buds or more per
stem. This year I de-budded it down to 4-5 buds per stem. That and warmer
dry weather seems to help the other buds bloom nicely.
Hum... sure seems to me that 4-5 buds per stem as you have shouldn't be a
problem for the rose... perhaps others have better ideas as to what is
needed. I've only fertilized my roses once this year and added compost and
most of them are at peak blooming now.
