Best Surprises

I thought long and hard before deciding which roses to "first" put in
my new rose garden (which I planned for 2 years as we were building
our new home), and I have had some lovely surprises. All are better
than the pictures.

Soft, sweet fragrant, Apothecary (old) rose has almost silky, larger
semi-double, deep bright pink blooms that fade beautifully into
lighter shades of pink instead of browning and looking dead. Very
nice.

William Shakespeare, one of the double, red(ish) English roses. It
opens with a quartering effect, with the larger outer petals of
velvety dark maroon, with the center petals curling to a button. The
middle petals are lighter reddish. Little fragrance but very lovely.

The rose with the most blooms (of the nearly 50 small ones that I
bought this spring from Heirloom Old Garden Roses) is Gertrude
Jekyll. She is only 12 inches tall (will reach 5-6 feet when mature)
and continues to put out very fragrant (set right next to my steps)
blooms. I have cut off 10 so far from this tiny immature plant. I'm
enjoying all my roses, even in the rain.
