[Rose-list] Re: Jewels of the Garden

'FANTIN-LATOUR'
> Ok, carleen, this one is going on my 'must have' list.

It doesn't have the most fabulous flower of them all, but I wouldn't call
them ugly either, the entire bush is truely nice. The buds are dark pink and
the blooms are light pink to palest pink almost white. Often the blooms
have splashes of med. pink. Kind of a short cupped blousy bloom.

matter?

I live in zone 7 or 8 (thought it was 8) and when I buy roses from Heirloom
OGR's here in Oregon (don't know if that's were you will get them, or one of
similar value... small own-root roses) I find that it's best to get the
little guys in Spring... they do fine if I buy them in the fall, but the
spring ones have a whole years growth on them and bloom the next
spring/summer... the fall ones take almost all spring just to get "settled"
and start growing well in late spring.

If you are going with a graphed or older roses (then these energy packed
pencils) then you should be just fine... Still perfer spring, but I don't
always deside the rose I want till later. :-)

> Does Fantin-Latour rebloom at all?

Sadly no... mine has been blooming CONTINUALLY for a little more two weeks
now, and I suspect she will hang on (as she is still at peak) for another
week or perhaps two with this cool wet weather we are still having. She
doesn't ball up either. She also jumped right in with blooming... one day
she's full of buds, the next she blooming... faster than most of my other
old roses.

I am especially fond of the old once bloomers that have a wonderful shrubs
threw the rest of the season, as she appears to have. The English roses
don't usually do that here, and they give out their blooms so sparingly
compared to the old roses. I'm guessing 'Fantin-Latour' has 60 blooms right
now.

I counted the blooms on my "Red Yankton" (found rose) at the end of peak and
he had 120+ blooms, yippeee... most repeating roses don't do that all year
long.. yah, I love the old ones.

Sincerely,
~Carleen~
