Re: Roses in Shade -Reply

Roses usually need 5-6 hours of sun to do well.
The ones that are considered "shade tolerant"
take less sun, less direct sun, a few even almost
no sun. The problem you may have in the bed
you're describing is tree roots. Most roses don't
do really well competing with a lot of tree
roots. I have several roses growing
around/under a 25' plum tree, most being 3-5'
away from the trunk. They are slow but sure to
grow, flower well, but I do make sure they are
fertilized and watered well, between the tree
probably stealing most of the water, and the
canopy keeping out the natural rain. The old
musk roses do particularly well in that
situation, for me at least.

You could also raise the bed a little, that would
help. I dig as big a whole as possible and put in
all the good stuff I can, so that to the extent
the roots need to grow, they should be happy.
It is a little bit of a challenge because of the
tree, but if you're up for the effort, well worth it.
If you want the names of roses I have
successfully grown in shade, please contact me
directly.
