Roses in shade/Under trees

In order to make best use of space under trees, why not plant your roses in
pots, and then place the pots under the trees?
This eliminates the problem of water/soil/food competition, and allows you
the possibility of moving the little darlings, should the need/opportunity
arise. In my Southern Ca. garden, I purposely grow varieties that would
burn/fade/wilt/turn purple under the hot midday sun in pots. During the
summer, they reside under the Liquidambars. At other times of the year, I
move the pots to give them the best possible conditions. Even if you don't
want to go through the trouble of moving them, potting up the roses that go
under the trees still makes sense, if only for the "competition" factor.
Standard Ht's and most OGR's will grow quite well in 15gal pots. Get the
best potting soil available from your local nursery, and you may find that
plants that previously "lacked vigor" in your yard all of a sudden come to
life.
Hint: buy a "handtruck," with an extra large "foot." it makes moving your
little darlings MUCH easier!
