Dear Carleen -
What kind of zone 6 in Oregon? Dry side or wet side?

Anyway, don't add sand to clay. Ever hear of adobe? Yep, Indians used it
for hundreds of years. Stick to the organic stuff.
And, any time you want to give a manure boost, be sure to cover it (like
you're using it in the holes) with at LEAST an inch of soil, three is
better. Don't want the roots finding it right away. Cathy, Idaho's zone
6a  in the high desert.
