Re: Local Rose Societies

Keith in NY:

The one in Louisville, Kentucky seems to favor the hybrid teas, too. We
recently had a gardening show and when I visited their booth, there was no
information on any other types of roses. When I asked if there was a local
nursery that supplied any rugosas or OGR's, they were hard pressed to even
come up with one name (and I'm going to check out that one supplier).

What irks me is that our climate is the least conducive to growing hybrid
teas. We have murderously hot, humid summer weather here and the blackspot
plague is awful (the hybrid tea lovers I work with even complain)! Why
more rose societies don't delve more into the other species of roses is
beyond me. I'm supposing that the larger societies probably do as they may
have a larger membership and therefore more diverse interests. If it
wasn't for this list, I would swim in dark when it came to my rugosas,
shrubs, and OGR's!

Anyone know why this seems to be so? What is the fascination with only
teas??
