W Martin:
I plant rugosas almost exclusively due to laziness on my part. Any plant
that has to be coddled along with sprays, special feedings and prunings,
etc. is not worth having in my garden in my opinion. With all of the beds
I have to maintain, I can't possibly devote the time to doing that!
After having said that, let me assure you that Hansa will do quite well in
that situation. It does not receive any extra watering from me (unless we
are going through a summer drought period) nor does it get any attention
other than a top dressing of rotted manure and epson salts come spring. It
doesn't like the chemical sprays, either. It has never developed any
diseases (and because I live in blackspot country, a REAL plus!) and the
bugs don't seem to bother it too much.
I've had it two years and it has performed like my other rugosas -- tough
as nails!
