Re: Yellow roses

A new rose to me this year (planted last year)
that has "come into its own" this year is
'Golden Celebration' by David Austin. It is a
deeper golden yellow that 'Graham Thomas,'
perhaps larger/fuller, too. Really beautiful and
great fragrance. More butterscotchish (how's
that for a made up color?). 'Pilgrim' by DA is a
deeper yellow in the center, lighter at the
edges, very pretty and packed with petals, more
the flat face than the cupped flowers of Graham
and Golden Celeb. Another good yellow for a
difficult situation is 'Golden Showers,' yes, a
HT, bright yellow, but this guy tolerates shade,
crowded conditions, etc. A climber, but only to
about 8', so just a little support is required. Not
much fragrance.

Another yellow climber that was just starting to
mature when I had to move it was Celine
Forestier. Deeper yellow in the center, lighter
as you move out, packed with petals and flat,
but smaller 3" flowers or so. Good fragrance.

My final suggestion for yellow is a musk rose,
'Buff Beauty.' Buffy/creamy/goldenish yellow
(struggling here), really beautiful, fragrant,
largeish (5 x 5), but will tolerate shade (mine is
growing in part *dry* shade, no less, and
performing fine. Slower to reach full size, tho, I
do give her extra water.)

Just bought Happy Child this year and can't
wait to see it bloom!

As to the seducement of favorite colors, it is a
constant struggle! I have a friend who "woke
up" one day and realized she had all pink roses,
practically (of course pink is easy to do because
that is the most common color of roses -- that's
why the color is "rose", I guess!). I have to
constantly evaluate my choices and work at
trying to have a mix of colors. But there's
nothing wrong with having all one color if
that's what you want! That's the best part of
gardening, doing it to please YOUR eye, not
everyone else's!

Isn't it amazing how your favorite
color can seduce you without you even realizing
it?!
