Margot,

I was finally able to grow them when I put the water retention crystals
in the planting hole with just a handful of soil over it then planting
the clematis on top of that.  Water in very well and make a basin around
the plant and water profusely all of the first year after planting. 
Water well in subsequent years but it is not so critical as it is the
first year.
