Re: [Rose-list] Clematis

I've got one clematis that I put in a couple years ago: as Celia Thaxter
says, I dug in a lot of material from my compost bin, and put in the
sturdy, healthy-looking plant--gorgeous dark blue flowers--a half foot
below ground level. In spring, the hostas grow up around it and shade
the roots. It's free to sprawl, along the raised bed edging the house,
climb up the white, ornamental grapes, and it's now readying itself to
take over a white, six foot obelisk I put in this spring, with a
Zephyrine Drouhin rose inside.

The first couple years were terrible droughts here in Maryland, so I
fussed over it, watered it a lot, and played Mozart for it.
I couldn't be happier with it; I'm looking for spots to put in some
more.
