Re: [Rose-list] Re: Soil Condition

Where I am, in the Washington, DC, area, the soil is infamous for being
nothing but clay. One of the children scooped up a batch when I first
moved in, and modelled figurines out of it. Raised beds is the standard,
and usually the easiest, solution. Previous owners built my front yard
by putting up a retaining wall near the street, and building up a decent
growing area behind it, leading to the house.

I've spent three years fixing up the bit of space across the driveway,
and the backyard (a clay slope leading to a creek) by treating the
entire surface, basically, as a composting area. I finally put in top
soil this spring, and am planting in earnest.
