Pardon my spelling..
Anyway, just received 5 ZD bare root roses. I ordered these before I had
planned where to put them ( on sale at J& P 5 for 24.95) . Now they're
here
so I need to get them in the ground ASAP and need some advice.
I live in NW Indiana-Zone 5. I have CLAY soil that I could make flower pots
from. About 2/3 of my lot is heavily wooded-various oaks, shagbark hickory,
wild cherry and hawthorn understory. I have an oval area in the woods that
I formerly used for my compost area, and now use to root shrub cuttings,
etc. , so the soil is better than most other places in the yard. There are
openings in the canopy where some late afternoon light filters through. I
have been thinking of doing sort of a fairie circle thing in this area,
incorporating the ZD roses (since I heard they do ok in shade), hostas,
woodland geraniums and other perennials, as well as some of the extra shrubs
I've rooted ( mostly forsythia, weigelia, mock orange, barberry). Will the
ZD roses do okay in this setting and bloom? Can I plant them there
initially, them move to a better location later? Biggest problem I have
with roses is black spot, and more recently japanese beetles.
Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
