I was under the impression that the reason HT's were usually grafted was
because their own root systems were less than vigorous.

I must admit that either I have some of the toughest roses to ever bud or
I'm an idiot savant when it comes to roses. I have an "inner circle" of
roses that have been through absolutely every extreme climate you can
imagine and have been dug up and moved numerous times and are still going
strong. I swear they can take anything and come back fighting! They are
split half own root and half grafted. I hope my kids turn out to be
gardeners because I'm sure those roses will still be around long after I'm
gone.
