Sunset Garden Book has the formula:
two teaspoons baking soda
two teaspoons Horticultural oil
for each gallon of water.
It has been our experience that many callers say this formula does NOT
work. What is being neglected is that, you must wash the existing mildew
off the plant with strong jets of water....then apply the baking soda
formula. Use as a preventative by applying weekly when weather encourages
fungus.
Circulation is important. I remove lower branches of my tea roses, thining
out the leaves also. And wash them often early in the day, especially the
lower branches, wetting the soil or mulch also as the fungus spores rise
from the mulch or soil. It is working for me so far. Never, never apply
baking soda in the heat of the day.
