Hi Joanie,
I might have already mentioned this, I'm in zone 7a and the small roses
that come in the long 4" pots just don't do well here when planted in the
fall. It IS tempting to get them in, hoping for lots of good root
establishment to give them a head start in spring, but that simply hasn't
worked for me. I've lost more than I care to count this way.
Bigger roses, or even young
transplanted roses have no trouble adjusting when planted in the fall; in
fact, I think some of them prefer it to spring. It allows them to settle in
before going into true dormancy.
Last fall I experimented with this fall / spring issue in regard to baby
roses -- little greenhouse grown baby roses. Unable to resist temptation, I
ordered them. I planted half of them and moved the other half up to gallon
containers, which I had to baby and shelter until spring. I lost half of
those I planted AND I tried valiantly to keep them healthy and alive. None of
the roses in containers died, but it was a pain to have to remember them in
the dead of winter. I didn't let any of them freeze and watched them pretty
carefully. That's my
story if it helps. Holly
Zone 7
