One more time..... I got a little carried away on that last email with
'Mme. Plantier'. :-P
Other ALBAs I love are:
'Alba Maxima' that has a dark green-blue foliage and is very upright with NO
trouble of disease. Nice white blooms a little on the blousy side with a
light nice fragrance.
'Great Maiden's Blush' is nice, but I'm waiting to see if she will
eventually get as prolific with blooms as these others, she seems to be slow
to establish and I've had her 2 years. Nice light blush pink blooms.
Other's I have I won't comment on yet as they are a year or less old.
BOURBONS can be nice blooms that repeat and have nice fragrances, but often
I have blackspot on them here, not as bad as many of the Hybrid Tea troubles
I once had, but about like many of the English roses. (Portland, Oregon
area rain/climate.)
I also love the CENTIFOLIA roses, there blooms are wonderful, most with very
deep cups that hold on the bush wonderfully. MY favorite is 'Paul Recault',
awesome dark pink blooms in ball like cups. Nice foliage too, though mine
isn't as "neat" so I prune it to shape.
DAMASK roses are WONDERFUL for fragrance, my nose especially loves 'Autumn
Damask bifera' for fragrance. Blooms are nothing fancy, but nice. Pale
pink and very loose and blousy. Canes are THORNY, but the fragrance to me
IS OLD ROSES... the best.
'Ispahan' is a beautiful rose, her blooms first open into delicate bud forms
that are a very lovely soft pink. She blooms a good long time too, 6-7
weeks for me. She can get very tall, I prune mine every year to keep her at
6 feet tall. Loaded with blooms that cascade long canes sweetly to the
ground. Nice rose, not a strong fragrance, but gorgeous blooms.
GALLICAs are generally shorter (3-4 feet tall) and can often spread. I like
my 'Apothecary Rose' flowers of a most undiscribably beautiful
color....darkest red-ish pink. Very nice fragrance, good hips, but he does
get some powdery mildew after blooming and this year I had troubles with
rust. It was the weather for it this year. Also Gallicas offer alot of
dark colors even purple.
MOSS roses are wonderful too, though less foliage in general with mine,
though many of mine are fairly young yet to tell. One that is FULL of
foliage and a wonderful rose, stays set well in form without much pruning at
all and covered in always healthy leaves is the delightful 'Mrs. William
Paul', nice flowers similar to that of a Centifolia, pale to med. pink with
a nice fragrance.
I could go on and on, but I gave you some highlight roses that I would NOT
be without. There are a few others I have that I would NOT be without, but
I've yet to ID them as they are "found" roses.
Enjoy and I hope that helps.
