Re: New Member

Hi, Mary:

You're the first letter in a long time. Let's see if we can get something
going here:

I've been very impressed with the hardiness, long bloom time and no-fussyness
with mini roses. I'd like to know if anyone could suggest a dark, clear pink
or a darkish coral or salmon color and a source if possible. These little
fellas are really work horses. I've never had a reason to treat them
chemically, I've never covered them for our Z.5a winters, no insects seem to
be attracted to them , they are attractive in habit and foliage and they
bloom from June to frost. I've only bought own-root plants and would prefer
to stick with those.

Also, on rugosas:

I have a 3rd year R. rugosa 'alba' which hasn't done much. It seems happy and
gets plenty of sun and no chemicals whatsoever. Only 8-9 blooms each year. Is
this normal? I've only pruned it each spring to remove any awkward looking
branches.

A comment:

I'm north of Chicago about 35 miles. In recent years, the Japanese Beetles
have become apparent around mid-July and hang around molesting the roses for
3 weeks. This year they appeared around the first week of August and stayed
plentiful and voracious to mid-Sept...I can still find some if I look hard.
Has anyone else noticed a change in their habits?

Glad to hear from you, Mary...I hope others are still out there. It's been a
terrifically informative list in the past and I do hope it revives. This list
has been responsible for the moths flying out of my checkbook as have become
insatiable about roses now.

Bye, Mary...happy gardening!
