Bonica Shrub Rose

Last spring I purchased a Bonica Shrub Rose, and subsequently lost it
over the winter. I went back to the nursery for a replacement plant,
and replanted it in the same location. Since then, I have found out
that it was a budded rose, not one grown on its own roots. I suspect I
should have planted it deeper to protect the bud union? Since I did not
plant it deep (either the first time or this time), and since my
guarantee is now bust, I'd like to do what I can to get this plant to
live! Suggestions, anyone? Do I have to treat it like a hybrid tea,
hill it up, etc.? (Please say it isn't so! I went with shrub roses to
*avoid* all this work, but I don't want to lose it.) Funny thing is, I
planted the same rose in my aunt's garden, and it was fine through the
winter.

My other question involves postings I have been lurking through lately
where someone mentioned that there are different varieties of Bonicas?
I thought a Bonica was a Bonica. Can someone elaborate on this?
