Carleen:
It's great to hear from you again - and I'd love to know the tricks you
mentioned to
get your apple trees to fruit in the center of the x's.
Also, can I move a couple of roses this fall or is it best to wait until
spring (gad,
that's a long way away)? Chicago's still has 70's in the day, 50's at night.
Sarah Van Fleet took off in July and nobody's seen her since...really, she
shot up
to 6' and that's in her first year.
Golden Wings is puny but appears healthy and wonderful single, pale yellow
blooms
with dynamite dark red delicate but thick stamens. It's also in its 1st year.
In Illinois we have no extension agencies that test for ph and those that
advertise to
do it for a fee are not always of quality, so I purchased a meter by by Hanna
Indus-
tries ($49 plus $7.50 for the solution to calibrate the meter - they also have
one for
$40) through Cynmar Corp. (1-800-223-3517) which states that it's accurate to
+/-0.1ph - haven't tried it yet but will try this week. Perhaps some of the
forum members would be interested too. It arrived in 2 days!
Bye, Joanie
