Hi Juan,
My turn this time, I knew if I waited long enough there would be
something I could answer for you.
There is an entry in Hadfield et al., British Gardeners (1980), as
follows: "Mason, Maurice (1912- ) Horticulturist. Although Mason is
one of the foremost sugar-beet farmers in East Anglia, he is also
widely acknowledged as a collector and cultivator of exotic plants.
With his wife, Margaret, he travels extensively throughout the world in
search of plants to enrich his considerable collections, which include some
400 species of begonia alone, as well as a vast number of species of
pineapple and a varied miscellany of cacti. His collections are housed in a
series of greenhouses, ranging from traditional timber-framed structures to
modern, lightweight aluminium-frame buildings."
There is also a portrait of him.
I think that he must still be alive, but his collecting days are long since
over. As a once past President of the NCSS, it might be possible to get more
information from people who knew him, and are still active in the Society.
