Re: [SANS] Variegated Sans.
Herm & Richard;
I agree with both of you and realize that ANY variegated plant can
'sport' more of the same or revert to green. This natural.
It also seems that any source (whether nursery or private grower)
shouldn't distribute a plant that does not 'come true '- that is the whole
point of selecting a certain clone. I sure don't want a plant labelled
Sansevieria anything that is called 'variegata', but isn't. We all need to
be more careful about this problem.
Seems that Sansevierias are notoriously bad in that some take a
while to even show up. I have a variegated sulcata (baccularis) that has
all green pups that take a few weeks to months for yellow stripes to
appear. Obviously not a very good clone.
Then to add insult to a poor performer, a choice variegated
Sansevieria can cost 'big bucks' from specialty nursery...and you may have
to wait years just be able to buy one.
Very frustrating.
On another comment from Hermine. I have wondered about this rumor
of chemically altered plants to induce variegation. We all know how some
herbicides will produce 'variegated foliage' in weeds - just short of
killing them, but these weeds usually 'grow out' of this stress and produce
lots of normal duplicates in short time.
A slower growing plant (like Sansevieria) might hang onto its
variegation for longer, but as long as it is not genetically altered all of
its progeny will have normal foliage. Selling plants like this is just
plain wrong.
