Hi, Annee,
Actually, here in the Fresno area, the Sunset and USDA Zones are pretty
much the same, depending upon which side of the thermal belt you find
yourself.
Sunset lists the area as Zones 8 and 9, while the refined USDA map that
I have calls it Zones 8b and 9a. Basically, we have long, hot, dry
summers with highs of 110 F. or more, and cold dryish winters with lows
usually in the high 20s-low 30s. First frost is usually late October or
early November; average last frost date is February 15. This past
winter was very severe (for us thin-skinned Californians), with some
lows down into the mid-teens. Ah, La Nina. Our winters generally bring
about 10 inches of rain, and days on end of ground fog ("tule fog")
which prevents the daytime temps from rising above the mid-40s.
Sound anything like Glendale, AZ?
My Sans grow very happily outside from spring to fall--either under a
tree, which provides filtered shade most of the day, or under the eaves
on the patio, where they get morning sun, then shade from about 11:00
a.m. on.
Hope this helps.
Carolyn
