Re: I.d.'s (leaf texture as an aid to...)

Dear Tom,

I have considered those to be various cultivars of the variable Sansevieria
suffruticosa N.E. Brown that are found in collections. The closely allied
Sans.gracilis and Sans.phillipsiae differ by having smooth leaves.

Pfennig divided Sans.suffruticosa into two varieties solely on the basis of
the length of the floral tube. I have been told that the distinction has
been breached by more recent collections.

Corolla tube 10-12 mm long.
Sans.suffruticosa var. suffruticosa N.E. Brown
Corolla tube 19-24 mm long.
Sans.suffruticosa var. longituba Pfennig (Bot. Jahrb. Syst. 102 (1-4): 178
(1981))

On that basis, Sans. Bally 12681 would fall under Sans.suffruticosa var.
longituba Pfennig but it has much shorter leaves than usual for
Sans.suffruticosa. Should it be considered a dwarf form?

Sansevieria 'Mutomo' is another with rough leaves like Sans.suffruticosa
but differs by the leaves being deeply ridged and laterally compressed
(sickle-shaped).

Other species in the Sans.suffruticosa group also have rough leaves.
Sans.hargeisiana Chahinian differs by lacking aerial runners and
Sans.caulescens N.E. Brown, Sans.francisii Chahinian and Sans.'McLoughlin'
are all caulescent.

Hey all,

I don't have examples of my own on leaf texture as I am just trying to
I.d. my plants at this point. Texture has played a role in this process
though.
I have a plant labeled Kenya #1 that is rough leafed and looks a lot
like bally 12681 at this point except that the leaves are lighter green
in color. It seems there are a few of these types of species floating
around. Are these actually different species or are they mostly just
variations of one or two? Quite puzzling to me.

Have a good one,
Tom
