Sansevieria transvaalensis mystery solved and praise for Sans.parva

Hello all,

Carolyn sent me three pix, two of the plant she received as "Sansevieria
transvaalensis" and one as Sans.parva. All three are actually of the same
plant, Sans.parva.

So "Sans.transvaalensis" is indeed an invalid renaming of Sans.parva, just
as Juan said! Another invalid name bites the dust!

Sansevieria parva (including Sans.dooneri) is one of the most prolific
species. It propagates quickly from stolons and soon fills a pot and plants
will poke out of the drainage holes and even grow out of the pot. It always
reminds me of a succulent version of the "Spider Plant" (Chlorophytum
comosum). It makes a far more superior house plant than the latter because
it is drought resistant, tolerates low light and does not get leaf die
back. It also does well in a hanging basket. There is even at least one
variegated cultivar of it. It deserves to be much better known in the
trade.

If some plants in the trade labeled as "Sans.transvaalensis" are actually
Sans.aethiopica, that would be all the more reason for discarding the
invalid name because it is a source of confusion.

Carolyn, keep up the good work sleuthing Sansevieria mysteries.

Cereusly Steve
