SANSEVIERIA CAESPITOSA

SANSEVIERIA CAESPITOSA

Stephen Jankalski

This is the other Sansevieria named by Kurt Dinter. Sansevieria caespitosa
Dinter was included in the synonymy of Sans.aethiopica Thunberg by
Obermeyer (1992) and Van Jaarsveld (1994). The illustration in Swinbourne
(1979) (fig. 7) does closely resemble the latter species.

However Pfennig (1979) says: "S.caespitosa is a rather inconspicuous plant
from South West Africa, described by Dinter in 1926. Each shoot has 10-20
linear-lanceolate, dark green leaves, 10-20 cm. long and 1-2 cm. wide. In
spite of many years in cultivation it refuses to bloom. It is a difficult
species, moreover, and therefore only of interest because of its grass-like
habit." His description and the illustration in A.B. Graf's Exotica suggest
a slender plant allied to Sans.grandicuspis Haworth and Sans.parva N.E.
Brown.

Of the two plants illustrated as this species in Morgenstern (1979), his
fig. 14 is probably the genuine Sans.caespitosa Dinter while his fig. 15 is
definitely a misidentified Sans.parva N.E. Brown.

"Sansevieria caespitoa Dinter [Fedde Repert. Spec. Nov. 23: 228 (1926)]

[Namibia] N.: Maltahohe, Dinter 3148.
