Fascinating background on S. "bacularis" guys. Thanks for the info. Steve,
I'm glad I'm not the only one who keeps Grigsby's Wishbooks from decades ago
(I've got some Abbey Garden catalogs that are from back then too, and most of
Grigsby's Wish Letters). They are great sources of information.
As a footnote to the discussion, I grow my big old "bacularis" within an
inverted tomato cage stuck down into the pot. It keeps all those long,
whip-like leaves nicely contained. Being an admirer if the minutiae of these
plants (and aren't we all), I love the deep eggplant purple color of the new
basal leaf sheaths.
But I don't, as yet, have a variegated one. Does anybody have one to trade?
