Re: sp. Lavranos 24534

Dear Kirk,

One should expect at least some variation in the different collections of
Sansevieria rorida as one goes from population to population. I look forward
to seeing your photos. One could only hope it is Sans. 'McLoughlin' or
something new!

I have seen seed grown plant of typically distichous Sans.patens that form
spiralled rosettes together with typical looking plants.

Your plant of Sans.kirkii "Super Clone" does indeed look more like typical
Sans.kirkii and not at all like the plant that John Gamesby had posted
pictures of under that name in the now defunct Sansevierias-as-a-hobby
forum. His plant looked more like your Sans.forskaoliana. The leaves were
thicker, more distinctly glaucous and without an undulate margin. Could
there have been a mix up somewhere along the line? You have seen the actual
plants at Grigsby's. We will know the identity of your plant when it finally
flowers.

Steve,.

Thanks for the opinion on Lav. 24534. While I know that my plant is not
powelli, I'm still not sure that it's rorida. Perhaps it is still in some
sort of juvenile form, but the leaves and not distichous. In fact, they are
tending to spiral. Also, they are under 6" long, on a plant with a stem 6"
tall. I photographed it today, so when the film is developed, I'll post a
link to the photo so you and everyone else can look at it.

While reading the archive you referred me to, I noticed that you believe
Grigsby's S. kirkii 'Superclone' is actually S. forskaoliana. This doesn't
seem accurate to me, especially after I changed the tags to "forskoliana" in
the pots of all my (former) "abyssinicas" last year. These plants are
totally different from the kirkii 'Superclone', and they look like the photo
in Vol. 4, No.1, page 4 of The Sansevieria Journal.

The juvenile leaves of the kirkii 'Superclone' look like normal kirkii
leaves
in my opinion. As the plant matures, it starts producing tall, thick,
club-like leaves, which are a lovely glaucous blue-green in color, with wavy
margins and no more than two per growth. Perhaps this plant is a natural
hybrid between kirkii and some other, more chunky species

I'll email a link to a photograph of each.

Kirk

Sansevieria kirkii var. kirkii 'Superclone' (Grigsby #81071).

This plant is in a 10" pot and about 36" tall.
