John and Jon,
Jon, Sansevieria aff. zanzibarica (there was never a S. zanzibarica around)
was a name given to a plant, without field provenance, by John Bleck when
he owned Abbey Garden. The plant was in the greenhouses of UCSB (University
of California at Santa Barbara), where John worked after.
I saw it and convinced him that the plant was actually S. robusta. I had
only a small specimen at home that had leaves growing in all directions.
However, UCSB's plant was quite mature and entirely distichous
(fan-like).This distinct plant has longitudinal lines "on twos and fours".
On a second visit I saw that he had changed the name to S. robusta.
So S. zanzibarica does not exist in cultivation with an identifiable name.
Also bear in mind that the word Zanzibar, as used by N.E. Brown and
previously used by Gerome and Labroy, is actually part of the German East
Africa, now Tanzania (Tanganyika and Zanzibar). N.E. Brown's use of the
word Zanzibar refers to the coastal German East Africa and not to the
island of Zanzibar, where you are going John..
However, I hope you find there one, or more Sansevierias.
Juan
