I guess like many folks, including my husband, people think of the US as
MAINLAND and not a far pacific place like HI.  Ed did tell me that the
plants at Koko Crater were not cared for when he located the planting, and
were fairly shrunken and dry. Many people think of HI as having a moist,
humid and tropical jungle climate, but of  course this is not uniformly so,
and some parts are searingly dry. Certainly Ed was generous, and I knew at
the time he sent S patens to me, that he had sent it out elsewhere.  .  and
in time my patens made seed, and those seedlings...i am afraid...perished
in our coldest winter on record in 132 years of record-keeping. or maybe
not, i have not yet gone through the whole collection. Yet.

It was DuPont who came up with rayon first and then nylon. rayon is really
cellulose, somehow dissolved and then pushed through spinnerettes to make a
fiber, whereas subsequent artificial fibers are made of synthetic
substances. and it was rayon which put an end to the attempt to grow a
fiber plant. I believe this  attempt to grow a fibrous plant to take the
place of hemp, which the Japanese had cut off the supply from Burma to the
US...as a retaliation to our having cut off their supply of petroleum...the
attempt to grow hemp led to the fast amounts of marijuana in my corner of
southern California.  This fiber was intended to make rope. Apparently you
cannot have a Navy without rope. back in those days. maybe now, for all I know.

because of nylon, i have no idea what silk stockings were!
