Re: [SANS] Sansevieria Zanzibar

Dear Diana,

As Juan has said, The plant in the trade as Sansevieria 'Zanzibar',
Sansevieria aff. zanzibarica and Sansevieria zanzibarica hort. not Gerome &
Labroy is actually Sansevieria robusta N.E. Brown from Kenya. Despite what
is implied by the misapplied name, it does not not come from Zanzibar.

There is a photo of this plant as Sansevieria aff. zanzibarica in the 1983
Abbey Garden Catalog on page 22.

See the following article for the details.

Chahinian, B.J. (1993) SANSEVIERIA EHRENBERGII & SANSEVIERIA ROBUSTA.
Sansevieria Journal 2 (1): 7-8, 1 fig.

The original Sansevieria zanzibarica Gerome & Labroy may not now in
cultivation and may actually be synonymous with Sansevieria perrotii
Warburg from Tanzania (the former German East Africa). It is interesting to
note that the original Sansevieria zanzibarica was described from a plant
grown in Paris in 1903 and that N.E. Brown had seen it before 1915!

I have also found out that the plant distributed by Abbey Gardens as
Sansevieria sp. #1 and later as Sansevieria "zeylanica" and Sansevieria
"zeylanica - trade type" is actually Sansevieria grandiscuspis Haworth as
was determined by Grigsby.

Can anyone tell me if Sansevieria Zanzibar is a
real species name. It's a beautiful plant that I
am thinking of showing at my county fair to help
expose others to something other than the
trifasciata species.
