Hi,
A sport its a spontaneous growth rpduced by a plant, which is different from
the parent plant.
A good example is Sansevieria trifasciata 'Hahnii'. It was produced by
Sansevieria trifasciata. It can, and has happened, again.
Collectors like these because they are "new plants" .They are also new
(non-botanical) varieties or new cultivars. ( Cultivar is cult-ivated
var-iety)
And before someone asks:
A non botanical variety should not be abbreviated and the word itself will
change in every language.
Example:
Sansevieria trifiasciata 'Hahnii' or Sansevieria trifasciata cv. 'Hahnii'.
In both cases Sansevieria trifasciata should be written in italics, which I
did not do because it may not get correctly to some people.
A botanical variety is that one found in the wild for which the word
"varietas" (in Latin) is applied and abbreviated "var.". This word does not
change with the language one is speaking.
Example:
Sansevieria suffruticosa var. longituba.
Again, all words except var. should be written in italics.
Cheers,
Juan
